History
- Only stadium in history to host two FIFA World Cup finals (1970 and 1986). The 2026 opener makes it the first to host three.
- Site of Pele's last World Cup final (Brazil 4-1 Italy, 1970) and Maradona's two goals against England in 1986: the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century.
- Diego Maradona lifted the Jules Rimet trophy here after Argentina beat West Germany 3-2 in the 1986 final.
- Home of Club America and the Mexico national team for nearly six decades. Capacity reduced from 105,000 at opening to ~87,000 today after seating modernization.
- Renamed Estadio Banorte for the 2026 tournament as part of a 2024 sponsorship deal with the Mexican bank.
